Lusaka pupils champion environmental protection

Some pupils from Lusaka’s Rhodes Park School and Crested Crane Academy in August visited the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Zambia to the United Nations in New York during their 15-day tour of the USA.
The pupils’ trip to the USA was part of the initiative of a Canadian-based organization GreenContributor that connects communities and organizations from around the world to establish partnerships with schools in developed, developing and underdeveloped countries.

Green Contributor offers opportunities for students to participate in environmental research based projects and activities where the students are challenged to take action in addressing real problems, find solutions that can be implemented locally and globally, as well as address the environmental sustainability component established under the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
The pupils are involved in sensitizing others about the need to preserve the environment.

The youths sing and recite poems about the environment, with particular focus on Zambia’s efforts in preserving the environment.
They visited several places in USA, including the capital city Washington, and have met mayors, UN officials and fellow pupils with whom they share experiences and ideas about means to protect the environment.

“Green Contributors have come at the right time in Zambia, and I would like this initiative to be replicated in many other schools in Zambia,” Zambia’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Dr Mwaba Kasese-Bota told the pupils and their teachers, who were in the company of Green Contributors officials.
